Accessing and Using VDI Desktops

Desktop Types

There are three main types of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) desktops available to employees and students: UiO Windows Desktop, UiO Linux Desktop and Scientific Desktops.

UiO Windows Desktop

  • Availability: Accessible to everyone without needing to request access.
  • Purpose: Ideal for general access to UiO resources, using Office applications, and everyday tasks similar to a typical Windows office or study computer.
  • Application examples: Microsoft Office, Web Browsers.

UiO Linux Desktop

  • Availability: Accessible to everyone without needing to request access.
  • Purpose: Ideal for general access to UiO resources, coding (python, java, C, etc), and everyday tasks similar to a typical Linux office or study computer.
  • Application examples: LibreOffice, Web Browsers, compilers, Pyhon, editors.

Scientific Desktops (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond)

  • Availability: You can request access here.
  • Purpose: Suitable for users needing more powerful machines or specialized software. Read more about their specific hardware configurations here.
  • Application examples: Microsoft Office, Web Browsers, Matlab, SPSS, RStudio, QGIS, Julia, LabVIEW, Gephi (and many many more).

 

Please send us an e-mail usit-vdi-drift@usit.uio.no (our RT queue) if you would like other applications installed to any of the virtual desktops.

 

Persistent Desktops

Our infrastructure supports persistent desktops running Windows or Linux operating. These high-performance desktops are suitable for intensive computational tasks and specialized applications.
