Subscribe via link
When you receive an email from a mailing list, there is usually a link at the bottom of the email that you can click on to subscribe. Such a link may also be provided on a website with information about the mailing list. Click the link, enter your email address (and password if the email list is limited), and click Submit.
You will receive a confirmation email once you have become a subscriber.
Registration directly in the mailing list system
Go to http://sympa.uio.no, click on your unit on the list, and log in with your UiO user name and password. In the menu Search for List(s) you can either search for a mailing list by name or subject, or find it in the Index of lists or Browse lists by categories.
When you have found the email list you want to subscribe to, click on Subscribe in the menu on the left.
If the list is not publicly available, you must send the list owner a subscription request. Click on Contact owners. Some lists require that all new members be approved by the administrator(s) of the list - then it can take some time from when you have clicked on Subscribe until you actually become a member.
You will receive a confirmation email once you have become a subscriber.
Registration by sending an e-mail
If you know the name of the list, you can also sign up for an e-mail list by sending a blank e-mail to sympa@unit-domain-to-list where in the subject field you write subscribe listname yourfirstname yourlastname.
Example: Clark Kent wants to sign up to the e-mail list superheroes@usit.uio.no. This can be done by sending an e-mail to sympa@usit.uio.no where the subject field is set to subscribe superheroes Clark Kent.
Subscribe to a list without a UiO email address
It is possible to subscribe to mailing lists at UiO even if you do not have a UiO user name and password. You will then need to get a password for the mailing list system.
Go to https://sympa.uio.no. Click on the Login menu in the top right corner and choose Other users. Click on First login and enter your e-mail address in the Your e-mail address field. Within a few minutes, you will be sent a password to the email address you provided.
Forgot your password?
If you are affiliated with UiO, you cannot be sent a new password to the list management system. If you have forgotten your password, please contact your local IT representative.
Subscribers who are not affiliated with UiO can be sent a new password by e-mail. This can be obtained by clicking on Lost password?, and entering the registered email address.
Welcome message
When you join a list yourself, you will always receive a welcome message.
When someone else joins a list, you'll usually get a welcome message, but not always. Either the administrator has chosen not to send a welcome message or the list gets its members from another list, a database, a file with addresses or similar.
If you reply to a welcome message, the reply will go to those who administer the list.
Tip: Keep the welcome message, so that you can easily find your way back to information about unsubscribing.
