Message from your Course Leader

Dear students at ISSJF 4711 Human Rights,

First of all thank you very much for selecting our summer school course in Human Rights. We appreciate your interest in an important and timely topic, and feel honoured by your decision to study it at the University of Oslo. We hope that what we offer will meet your expectations and that the skills you acquire will prove valuable in your further career.

As course leader, and being convinced that active student participation is a vital ingredient in a successful course, with this first message to all, I would kindly ask you to prepare a very brief note answering two questions about human rights before we start on 27 June. Not more than 300 words on each question:

  1. What is the most serious human rights problem in your home country?
  2. Why do you consider this problem to be a human rights problem?

The idea is that you may use this exercise to start focussing on the course and that the cases you pick can be used in the self-presentation we are going to give when we meet on the first day of the course. We shall also use these cases on the ninth day of the course (7 July) which is set aside for group work because at that point in the course we should start adding what we have learnt so far and see how it relates to cases we already know. That is where we start building new skills and competences.

Kind regards,

Stener Ekern
