I scanned and uploaded my notes for solutions to selected problems from Martin and Shaw Chapters 9,10,and 11.

I just wanted to point out that I have for some time scanned my lecture notes and made them available.

I have prepared myself with the following problems from Martin&Shaw chapters, 9, 10, 11:

9.5
9.6  - I looked up the branching ratios you need: B(D0->K+pi-) = (1.385+-0.027)x10^-4 and B(D0->K-pi+) = (3.89+-0.04)%

10.8 - Here it is useful to remember that the unit of cross-section is 1 barn = 10^-24 cm^2. For comparison the design luminosity of the LHC is 10^34/(cm^2 s). See table 10.0 for the Higgs branching ratios and I looked up B(Z->bbar)=15% for you.

10.10 - See figure 10.17 on page 294 for inspiration

11.1
11.4
11.6 - Here you can assume that on the average the B+ and B- share the momentum of the Upsilon(4S) equally.

Sorry this all comes a bit late for you to prepare...  See you tomorrow!

Remember that today's and Wednesday's lectures are cancelled, as compensation for the trip to CERN.

A number of you wanted to be informed about this morning's trial lecture by my PhD student Laura Franconi on neutrinoless double-beta decay:

Doctoral candidate Master in Physics Laura Franconi at Department of Physics will give a trial lecture on the given topic:

"The search for neutrino-less double beta decay"

Sorry for the late information. Tomorrow's lectures are postponed. The revised plan is to use some time at CERN to cover the material (M&S-Chapters 7 and 9) needed to set the stage for M&S-Chapter 10 about the Higgs boson.

An "assignment" for the midterm has been set up. You should see it when you log in to devilry.ifi.uio.no with your uio account. Please let us know (e.g. posting in piazza) if there are any problems. The (soft) deadline has been set to 23:59 on Friday, March 23.

A typing mistake in Problem 8, Process 8 was noted by one of the students. It is now fixed in the pdf.

See also the discussion in piazza @23.

The deadline is Friday, March 23. The exam has been uploaded to vortex. The delivery will be in Devilry - details for this will be available by Tuesday, March 13.

On Thursday, 1. March Frank from the nuclear physics group will defend his PhD thesis. The trial lecture (see link below) starts at 10:15 in the Geology building, auditorium 1 and you're all welcome to listen to this.

The importance of nuclear backgrounds in direct detection searches for dark matter

Due to this event we will not be able to hold the problem session at 10am. We may move it to any of the options posted below.

We decided to have a short session, from 9-10am instead.

For out-of-hours questions and discussion and informal announcements I have created a piazza room for us. The signup link is piazza.com/uio.no/spring2018/fys3500

I will soon post a copy of the signup sheet for the trip to CERN in week 15.

Cheers, Alex
