Installing SMLNJ on MacOS 10.8.x: after installation, find the file libexec/bin/.arch-n-opsys and add another line to the "Darwin"-section:

12*) OPSYS=darwin; HEAP_OPSYS=darwin ;; # MacOS X 10.8

If you have trouble installing SMLNJ yourself, you can use Homebrew .
