HME4208 – Just health care
Course description
Course content
Inequalities in access to health care, combined with increases in the costs of health care, have fueled debates about social justice. This course explores different concepts of distributive justice in health and health care, and answers questions such as:
- What makes health and health care special in the context of distribution?
- Is inequality in access to health care, and inequality in health, a moral problem?
- When is rationing fair?
- Should we be held responsible for our health?
Learning outcome
This course aims at giving students up-to-date knowledge on a variety of issues of distributive justice within the health care context.

No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
All written exams and term papers at the master's programme in Health Economics, Policy and Management have to be conducted in English.

Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in make-up exams. Students that fail the exam also has this opportunity. Make-up exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in make-up exams.
Students who wish to re-take an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in make-up exams, but must re-take the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
