Course content
THIS PROGRAMME IS UNDERGOING CHANGES IN BOTH STRUCTURE AND CONTENT. CHANGES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN FALL 2010. THE WEBPAGES WILL BE UPDATED WITH THE NEW COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT SOON.
On the second year of CIE, students are required to write at master thesis of 80-120 pages. The third semester offers specialized research methods courses (EDU4021) and Research Proposal Seminar (EDU4050) as a preparation for the thesis work.
Field work:
The thesis should preferably be based on field studies conducted in the student´s country of origin. Norwegian students are encouraged to conduct the data-collection in a different country than Norway. The field-work may incorporate interviews with educational practitioners and decision-makers, class-room observation and documentary analysis. It is recommended that the data collection takes place during the third semester.
In the fourth semester students are to concentrate fully on writing their thesis. Each student is appointed a supervisor by the Institute on the basis of their research proposal.
Learning outcome
Completion of the thesis as an independent piece of scientific research demonstrates the student´s competence in comparative and international education in relation to the aims of the programme.
Admission

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
The thesis is a part of the Master programme in Comparative and International Education. Only students who are formally accepted and have passed the previous exams of the program may register for the thesis.
Teaching
Students will recieve individual tutorials to guide the process of writing the thesis. Each student has the right to 42 hours of supervision. The quota includes supervisor’s preparation and 14 hours of face to face supervision.
Students and tutors are required to discuss, fill out and hand in a Tutoring agreement which can be obtained at the institute offices.
Examination
The length of the thesis should be between 80 -120 pages. Within six weeks from submission, the thesis will be examined by a committee, who also will be present at a final discussion with the candidate about the thesis. The final evaluation will be based on an assessment both of the written thesis, and the oral defence. Grades are: A, B, C, D, E and F(ail).
