UV9225 – Introduction to Educational Measurement

Course content

This course is intended as an introduction to relevant concepts, theories, and applications related to educational measurement. Emphasis will be on traditional means of measuring and assessing subjects, particularly with respect to measuring educational outcomes; however, the course will also touch on measuring psychological concepts.

Topics covered include:

  1. Purposes of measuring and assessing
  2. How to define and measure what someone knows
  3. History and applications
  4. Types of assessments (formative/summative, paper-pencil/computer-based)
  5. Classical test theory, including reliability.

As part of this course, students are expected to complete short homework exercises, some of which involve data analysis. The course will also involve a computer lab component where students learn to analyze test data and interpret the results.

Learning outcome

Upon completion, students should be able to read and critically evaluate basic and applied research that deals with measuring attributes of human subjects. They should also be able to conduct basic analyses on test data and come to conclusions about the performance and quality of measures.
