Mail's VIP filter is somewhat similar to Smart Mailbox.
When you receive an email from a person you have defined as important, the email appears in a separate VIP mailbox. The original email remains in the mailbox it was delivered to. The purpose of these mailboxes is to make it easier for you to see e-mails that are important to you.
How to define a VIP
Open a message, move the pointer to the sender's name and click the star icon to the left of the name. Alternatively, you can hover over the email address, which will turn blue, click the downward-pointing triangle, and select Add to VIPs.
VIP as a rule in a filter
You can set up a filter with the Sender Is VIP rule. Then you can also add an additional notification - for example, a sound, or a jumping dock icon - when you receive an email from that person.
