Dear All,

During the next lecture (the 11/4) we will dedicate some time for the "midterm evaluation" of the course. There is a document available at the course website that I will print out, bring to the lecture, and ask you to comment. The reason I put it on the website is twofold: (i) possibly you would have time to look though the questions in advance and (ii) you may not be present on the 11/4 by still have access to the midterm evaluation questions and can potentially give me the feedback simply by delivering this form into the FYS3410-box at the Desk Office at the Dept of Physics.

Thanks in advance.

WR,

Andrej.

 Dear All,

I have a commet regarding 1d from Module II. Firstly, let me explain why do we deal with (d) part at all. Indeed we could derive what is required in (a-c) and stop there. However, by proposing (d) I wanted to make a point that 1D model is readily applicable for 3D latticestoo (!), as long as one looks in a specific direction (see e.g. Eq 59 in p82 of Kittels book). However, be aware to use values with consistent dimentions when calculating (d)! Finally, I propose we stop after calculating maximum frequency and omit calculating the vibration amplitude. Frequency is good enough.

Good luck.

WR,

Andrej.

In the front page, please indicate your "candidate number", not your name. delivery is done to the "Expedition Office" at the Dept of Physics (there is a FYS3410 box). In case you are unable to deliver to the Office, email delivery may be acceptable. In neither case, please, try to be on schedule and no to delay the delivery.

Compulsory assignements will be chosen from the list of the Practical assingments already available on the web. The list of Compulsory assignements will be published on the 8/2.

Dear All.

It is my pleasure to confirm we have our first lecture in FYS3410 on the 18/01/2016.

I will try to follow the schedule avoiding unnecessary cancelations, delays, etc. Nevertheless, I have to suggest a few changes, because the schedule is not collision free for me. As a backup, in addition to our normal times on Mondays i.e.10-12 am, lille fys aud is booked for us at 9-10 am too, and I plan - occasionally - start our lectures at 9 am instead of 10 am. That would compensate specifically if the "Wednesday" lecture is canceled, which is unfortunately going to happen a couple of times during this semester.

Namely, for the next week the lecture on Wednesday the 20/1 is canceled, while the lecture on Monday, the 18/1 is given during 9-12 am.

Looking forward to see you on the 18/1!

WR,

Andrej K.
