Python for mandatory exercise 1

If you have your own laptop/computer:

You will need python (or matlab but we'll mainly support python) for the first mandatory exercise, so here you'll find some tips on how to get started (if you're not already familiar with it).

We recommend you to install Anaconda 5.1 from here - this will give you python 3.6 and Jupyter Notebook which is a helpful tool in order to run python.

On Windows/Mac:

Install Anaconda for windows/mac for python 3.6.

Follow the standard installation instructions.

You can now run python wither from a terminal (write "python scriptname.py") or you can run it by opening Jupyter Notebook.

We recommend you to use Jupyter notebook. A beginners guide can be found here

Jupyter notebook:

Once you open Jupyter notebook, a window in your browser will open, looking something like this:

Now press, "New" and then "Python 3".

Now a window like this will open (except for the text):

You run the code in a cell by pressing CTR+ENTER. The exampel-code.

Python:

If you are unfamiliar with python, you may want to e.g. take a look at this tutorial at codeacademy.com

If you know a bit of programming from before, maybe it suffices to have a look at this plotting tutorial.

On linux:

If you have a unix-based Os, I suspect you'll be able to figure this out by yourself. Send me an email if not :)

If you DON'T have your own laptop/computer:

Some of the computers at UiO, most likely the ones at ifi, have python installed. Some might also have Jupyter notebook mentioned above.

If you plan to use the UiO computers and have difficulties, please contact me or someone at the computer labs at UiO.
